Birtwhistle in a letter to Alan dated 3/13/1987) or from Ellsmereport, east of Birkenhead ( as related to Alan by his father Lester). Such sailing was in the 1870s, and came to Englewood, New Jersey. Actual date in 1868 from records, see emigration entry. Martha & Alan actually went through Birkenhead on a cruise tour.
