From James Lundy's grandson Iain Lundy, February 19, 2022
Arlene McKellar's great-grandfather was a Samuel Ferguson, and it seems he was the head gardener at Ashcraig before my grandfather. Samuel and his wife Margaret seem to have lived in the south lodge while my grandparents were in the north lodge from the late 20s onwards. My grandfather, I think, was first employed by a family called French, so would have worked at Ashcraig under three owners including your parents. So the Fergusons were likely there before the French family. From what I understand from Arlene, the Fergusons came to Ashcraig from Dundonald in Ayrshire, not far from Troon. I emailed Arlene to tell her you had been in touch so I'm sure she'll be in contact.
Regarding my folks and their history: My grandfather, James Lundy, was born in 1889 in Loughinisland, County Down, Northern Ireland. He moved to Scotland early last century and served in WW1. He was working as a gardener at the Polnoon Estate near a village called Eaglesham, south of Glasgow, which was where he met my grandmother. She had been born in Roy Bridge, Invernesshire, in 1900. She was orphaned at 14 and she went to work at the Eglinton Arms Hotel in Eaglesham, now a Best Western hotel. They got married in 1920 in Clarkston, south of Glasgow.
In 1920 my grandfather was working as gardener at Redholm, a large house in Wemyss Bay. If you Google Map Wemyss Bay, you'll see a road just north of the pier that runs along the coast called Wemyss Bay Road. The third house along has a driveway leading to the house and diverging to the left, and that is Redholm. I've attached a photo I took a few years ago. My uncles Tommy and Donald were born there, and they moved to Ashcraig around 1926. My father was born there a year later and the youngest brother Hugh in 1932.
Obviously, my father spent a lot of holiday time in Roy Bridge, and he met my mother, who was born there. So, my Roy Bridge roots are very deep. When I was young it seemed like the entire village was an uncle, aunt, cousin, or some sort of relative. Again, if you Google Map Roy Bridge you'll find an old crofting hamlet called Bohenie. My grandmother was brought up there and other members of my family have lived there over the generations.
Regarding Loughinisland, it's a small market town but hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons during the Irish Troubles. In 1994 a group of villagers were in a bar watching a World Cup football match when two gunmen burst in and opened fire, killing six people including an 87-year-old man. So, a nice quiet wee place we come from.
My grandparents lived in the North Lodge when I was born but I spent the first three years of my life in the South Lodge from 1956 to 1959. I'm honestly not sure why. My father was a motor mechanic working in Largs, so I don't know what the arrangement was. After we moved to Largs, we still spent a lot of time at Ashcraig. I seem to remember spending much of my summer holidays there one year and have very fond childhood memories of the place and the people who lived there.
