  Per Sue Kerr in the Lord Family Tree- Joseph Birtwell appears in the Baptismal register of St Mary Magdalen's Parish Records as Joseph Birtwistle illegitimate son of Jane Birtwistle. Date of baptism is 21 Sept. 1806 Abode: is Clitheroe, Pg 37 Entry16, LDS Film No. 1278857 obtained through the Lancashire Parish Clerks online records, under St Mary Magdalen's Church, Clitheroe, Lancashire. When Joseph married in 1830, it appears he had changed the spelling of his surname, like many of his forebears in the area. It may have been a way of distancing himself from the illegitimacy which isolated him from the Birtwistle's formerly of Huncoat Hall, and who had many relatives in the Whalley, Clitheroe, Read and Simonstone districts. Jane Birtwhistle's prestigious family connections are notin doubt and can be traced back 31 Generations to 1160 A.D., (Ralph de Bridtwisell who lived at the village of Briddestwysel. Bridtwisell still exists (1990's) next to what is now known as the Clough, between the villages of Hapton and Huncoat near Burnley in Lancashire) The name Bridtwisell has been researched by William A. Birtwistle in his book 'The Birtwistle Family 1200 - 1890 A.D.' and it means a clearing between two streams where birds gather. Research has made it clear that incumbents at the local churches (particularly Whalley Parish Church of St Mary's and All Saints), took it upon themselves to abbreviate surnames of large families of sons, who lived, worked and married and stayed in the area. (eg Birtwhistle, became, Birtwistle, Birtw'l, therefore Birtwell, Bertwell and hence Bertwhistle, and so Thomas Birtwhistle and his family from Read, was distinguished from Thomas Birtwistle from Pendleton, and Thomas Bertwell from Whalley). This practice which was compounded by illiterate incumbents from time to time who misheard and / ormis-spelled names all went towards preventing too much confusion when children, from these similarly named families were being born and frequently buried the same month, let alone the same year. Transcript errors have also made it clear that some of the handwriting in registers is often at fault when names have been mis-spelled.
