  He became Deputy Lieutenant of Kirkcudbright Billy's book, page 141 Bob Birtwhistle provided all the birth locations and notes that the family appears to have lived in northern France from about 1834 until 1845, before returning to Dumfries (SW Scotland) and eventually to Cheltenhan, England abt 1854. John (Purdie) Birtwhistle had no military career. This appears to be a mix up with details of John Dixon Birtwhistle. He was however appointed Deputy Lieutenant's of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. (Bob Birtwhistle. +++++++++++++ BIRTWHISTLES OF GATEHOUSE OF FLEET John Birtwhistle 1799-1869, the son of Alexander, ran the mill until it finally closed. He became Colonel Birtwhistle in 1840 and was also Deputy Lieutenant of Kirkcudbright and, after living on St Mary's Isle in the Bay of Kirkcudbright, finally moved to Cheltenham, where he died in 1869, followed by his wife Martha Maria in 1872. John and Martha Maria Birtwhistle had three sons, Alexander Charles, William Aird and John, who all took up military careers. The elder two died on active service and John lived to an old age but, unfortunately, there are no male descendants from this branch of the family. Alan Birtwhistle, we tried to identify who had been granted the ‘John Birtwhisle of Dundeugh’ Coat of Arms mentioned (see Coat of Arms chapter). (https://descentfromadam.wordpress.com/2021/05/17/birtwistle-coats-of-arms/) Bob Birtwhistle – who is behind the Birtwhistle.info site – is pretty certain that it’s John Birtwhistle 1799-1869. He was the son of Alexander Birtwhistle (1750-1810) and Mary Purdie and, and also Deputy Lieutenant of Kirkudbright. It’s the double ‘Sables and Chevron between three weasels passant’ that Bob thinks supports the coat of arms being linked to this John, because it represents the marriage to his first cousin Martha – daughter of William Birtwhistle (1744-1819). The c. 1830 date he put on this on his site was largely guesswork. And Bob now things it may in fact have been created a little later after John had finally settled in the ‘very fashionable’ town of Cheltenham. He doesn’t think this particular Coat of Arms was actually ever ‘presented’, but likely something John had a ‘specialist’ create for himself based on family history, i.e. to support his ‘position in society’, which was common in the 19th Century (see Kirby Coat of Arms revisited post). Interestingly, Bob points out that the motto ‘Serenus in Arduis’ (Calm in Adversity) and the Dolphin crest that are incorporated into the John of Dundeugh Coat of Arms, also appear on another earlier Coat of Arms. eSee the engraving on the back of a silver cup presented in 1802 to Alexander Birtwhistle (1750-1810) in Gatehouse-of-Fleet by the ‘Gatehouse Volunteers’ (the local Militia of whom he was the Commanding Officer): ... and more....
