      See Bob Birtwhistle's web site for full military service between 1841 and 1855. www.birtwhistle.info He received the award for saving the life of a seaman (Stephen Bax) who had fallen from the toprigging into the sea off Sheerness with his captain (Lt. Commander Wooldridge) who had been the first to dive in to save the seaman, but got into difficulties himself. Bob Birtwhistle

FOR THE STEWARTRY OF KIRKCUDBRIGHT N.B. / AND MARTHA MARIA HIS WIFE. / HE SERVED WITH DISTINCTION THROUGH THE CHINESE WAR AND IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD / & RECEIVED A MEDAL FROM THE ROYAL HUMANE / SOCIETY FOR HIS GALLANTRY IN SAVING LIVES OF SEAMEN.'
