- HECTOR MACLEAN
The late Hector H. MacLean, for many years manager of the Del Prado Hotel of Chicago, was One of the best known hotelmen of the country, and one possessed of the happy faculty of distinguishing between essential and non-essential. His was of a nature to create respect and invite intercourse, and he numbered among his warm, personal friends many of the people of true importance the country over. Hedeveloped to the highest degree of efficiency the resources: of his charming hostelry, and from the start established and maintained a wise and effective administration. His standing in his communitywas conspicuously high.
Hector H. MacLean was born at Finch, Ontario, Canada, February 27, 1873, but came of fine Scotch ancestry, his parents, Hector H. and Janet MacLean having been born in Scotland. After attending the schools of his native place, Mr. MacLean studied for some time at Belleville College. 1n 1898 he came to Chicago. The first five years in this city he devoted to handling real estate in partnership withhis brother, David MacLean; but he did not find his real sphere of usefulness until October 17, 1902, when, at the earnest solicitation of Mr. Bradley, he undertook the management of the Del Prado Hotel and continued with it until his death. On May 20, 1902 Mr. MacLean was married to Miss Mable B. Doxsee of Syracuse, N. Y., a daughter of Thomas W. and Phebe (Maston) IDOXsee of Canada. Mr. and Mrs. MacLean became the parents of Edward, Hector and Robert MacLean. Mr. MacLean had a very wide circle of friends and his guests at the Del Prado appreciated his sincere and successful effort in makingit a real home. His was a strong and kindly personality, and for sixteen years he was the dominating factor in producing the unusual charm of his hotel. On January 26, 1918, his friends were shocked to learn of his death, in an automobile accident while travelling in the West. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church. An enthusiastic Mason, he attained to the Thirty-second Degree in that order, and his life was governed according to its ideals. He also was a member of the South Shore Country Club.
