      Life Sketch

Adriana van der Weede was born about 1517 in Antwerp, Belgium. She was the daughter of Bernard van der Weede and Anne Ortels/Ortelius. She was the Granddaughter of William Ortels/Ortelius, niece of Jacob van Meteren (who assisted in the printing of the first English Bibles) and Ottilia Ortels/Ortelius, cousin to the world famous map maker, Abraham Ortelius, and cousin to the distinguished writer of the 1614 "History of the Netherlands", Emanuel van Meteren.

According to the personal writings of her husband, John Rogers, at the time that he was martyred in 1555 he had been married to her for 18 years. That would make their marriage year 1536/1537. They had 11 children together.(their family pedigrees are attached below in the sources) She has also been known as : Dewyden, De Weyden, Adryn, Adriana, Alids, Adraina, Adryana, Adrianne and Adrienne. It has been said that her last name was anglicized to "Pratt" in 1552...I don't have information on that at this point.

According to the two family pedigrees held in the British Museum, made in 1563 and 1619, the children of John Rogers and Adriana van der Weede were as follows:

"1. Daniel, of Sunbury, county of Middlesex, Clerk of the Council to Queen Elizabeth (ob. 1591), who married Susan, daughter of Nicasius Yetsworth, clerk of the Signet, and Secretary for the French tounge.
      2. John, a Proctor of the Civil Law, who married Mary, daughter of William Leete, of Everden, county of Cambridge, D.C.L
      3. Ambrose
      4. Samuel
      5. Philip
      6. Bernard
      7. Augustine
      8. Barnaby
      9. Susan, who married John Short, merchant, of London
      10. Elizabeth, who married James Proctor, Chancellor of Salisbury
      11. Hester, who married Henry Ball, Physician."

John ROGERS [REVEREND] was born on 4 Feb 1507 in Deritend, Warwickshire, England. He died on 4 Feb 1555 near Smithfield, England.

      Abouthistory
Adriana Pratt, alias de Weyden (b. probably in Antwerpen, Herzogtum Brabant, Heiliges Römisches Reich, within present Région flamande, Belgium). Wife of Rev. John Rogers "The Martyr"

The Coverdale Bible, compiled by Myles Coverdale and published in 1535, was the first complete Modern English translation of the Bible (not just the Old Testament or New Testament), and the first complete printed translation into English (cf. Wycliffe’s Bible in manuscript). The later editions (folio and quarto) published in 1539 were the first complete Bibles printed in England. The 1539 folio edition carried the royal licence and was therefore the first officially approved Bible translation in English.

The place of publication of the 1535 edition was long disputed. The printer was assumed to be either Froschover in Zurich or Cervicornus and Soter (in Cologne or Marburg). Since the discovery of Guido Latré in 1997, the printer has been identified as Merten de Keyser in Antwerp. The publication was partly financed by Jacobus van Meteren in Antwerp, whose sister-in-law, Adriana de Weyden, married John Rogers. The other backer of the Coverdale Bible was Jacobus van Meteren’s nephew, Leonard Ortels (†1539), father of Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), the famous humanist geographer and cartographer.

Although Coverdale was also involved in the preparation of the Great Bible of 1539, the Coverdale Bible continued to be reprinted. The last of over 20 editions of the whole Bible or its New Testament appeared in 1553.

There are family trees that list Adrianna's father as Micheydon DeWeyden Pratt (and all possible permutations of this name) and her mother with the surname VanMeteren. However, the dates do not make sense.
