Of an ancient family, simple and unostentatious in her habits, distinguished by her literary taste, her hospitality to the poor, and her interest in their education, her death, although at an advanced age of 73, will be generally regretted. The maiden name of the deceased was Janet Esther Whyte, only daughter of James Whyte of Newmains. She was married to William Howeson Craufurd of Craufurdland and Braehead in 1808. The only living issue of this marriage is a son and daughter.
