      Notes
1 - Robert had many children. Some are known to have been by his wife Isabel, some by his mistress Elizabeth, but the mother of others is uncertain. They are thought to be by either Isabel or Elizabeth but The Scots Peerage and other sources are not clear.
1543 Robert Sempill succeeds on his fathers resignation of duties.
1547 Robert, Lord Sempill III , Great Lord Semple, constable of the king's Castle of Douglas, is taken prisoner by the English at the Battle of Pinkie.
1560 Lord Robert Sempill III opposes the reformation and his castle is attacked, seized, and destroyed.
???? Lord Darnley is murdered. (supposedly by his wife, Mary Queen of Scots). Lord Sempill III seeks to promote Mary's son, James, as ruler in place of Mary. Lord Sempill III fights against the Queen and Bothwell at the Battle of Carberry
Hill, where he signed a warrent for her confinement in Lochleven Castle. Mary later escapes.
1568 Lord Sempill III leads the van of Regent Moray's army at the Battle of Langside. Moray's forces capture Mary, Queen of Scots. For his services, Sempill receives a charter to the abbey lands of Paisley, which had been forfeited from Lord Claud Hamilton. Hamilton will later regain the lands.
1570 Sempill III's friend, Regent Moray, is murdered, Sempill's ambitions are setback. Sempill is imprisoned for a year.
1571 Lord Sempill III is appointed Privy Councillor by James VI, and sent as ambassador to Spain. He is given a charter of some lands in the barony of Glasfoord. Robert is named Lt. General and Justicar of Lanark and Renfrew. He does not renounce the Catholic faith, and therefore, is prohibited from attaining any other high public office.
1572 Lord Robert Sempill IV, Master of Sempill dies before his father. Robert Lord Sempill IV, grandson of Robert Lord Sempill III, has his charter confirmed by the crown.

2 - 3rd Lord Sempill (c. 1505-1572), assisted the Scottish regent, Mary of Lorraine, in her struggle with the lords of the congregation, and was afterwards one of the partisans of Mary, queen of Scots; about 1566, however, he deserted the queen, against whom he fought at Carberry Hill and at Langside. His grandson, Robert (d. 1611), became the 4th Lord Sempill, and another grandson was Sir James Sempill of Beltrees.

3 - pardoned with his father and two of his younger brothers for the murder of Cornelius de Machetema at the Tolbooth, Edinburgh 1526; Governor and Constable of Douglas Castle 1533; in exile in England for murder 1541; Sheriff of Renfrew 1543/4; Bailiff of the Regality of Paisley 1544; taken prisoner at the Battle of Pinkie 1547; killed William [Crichton], 5th Lord Crichton of Sanquhar 1550; subscribed the Earl of Arran's bond 1553/4 ; supported the Queen Regent against the Lords of the Congregation resulting in Sempill Castle being besieged and taken 1560; despite being a Roman Catholic he joined the Association to defend King James VI 1567; commanded the vanguard at the Battle of Carberry Hill 1567; present at the opening of the infamous "casket letter"; fought against Queen Mary at the Battle of Langside 1568; Joint Lieutenant of the Western Ports 1568; kidnapped by the Hamiltons 1570; Privy Councillor 1571; Lieut-General and Justiciar of Lanark and Renfrew 1572; put to the horn and excommunicated 1573.
