From my cousin Pip 3 December 2022
I did do some research into Cyril’s MC, trying to establish what deeds led to it. It was awarded for his part in a battle on 14th July 1918 in Palestine. Known then as the “The Affair at Abu Tellul”, his battery was in support of the Australian Light Horse, who repulsed a strong German/Turkish attack on the hills above the Jordan Valley. Despite much searching, I have not been able to find out exactly what he did, but a congratulatory letter from a fellow officer says: “As your F.O.O.-ing (Forward Officer Observing) in the Jordan Valley on July 14th, I have no hesitation in saying you saved the Valley, and possibly Jerusalem as well”.

The "fracture of skull" maybe related to the time Cyril’s was kicked in the head by a mule in Palestine. Angela also mentions "He also never really recovered from being gassed".
