She was born Mary Hartley in 1834, the eldest daughter of Ralph Hartley and Inn Keeper in Blackburn and Ann (née Cunliffe). The photograph has no date but was taken by J.Frankland Photograher of 115 Fielden Street, Blackburn.

She married James Astley of Beardwood Hall, Blackburn, whose family had made their fortune from a mixture of textiles and groceries. His photograph was taken by Silas Esatham Photographer of 217 Lord Steet in Southport.

The Marriage of Mr. Andrew Little McLaren, third son of the late John (Robert) Maclaren of Skelmerlig, Dunbartonshir (Skelmorlie, Ayrshire?) and Miss Eva Friend, third daughter of the late Mr Owen Friend of Bendamine station, took place on the 24 inst. in the St. Mark's Church, Darling Point.

The church was tastefully decorated with palms and arum lilies. The Reverend Willoughby Flower officiated.

The bride, who was given away by her brother Mr. O. E. Friend, wore a Brussels lace, over white satin.. The court train was also of the lace embroidered in chiffon roses. Her veil was fastened over a small orange blossom wreath, and she wore a diamond pendant, the bridegroom 's gift. The bridesmaids were Misses Stella and Gwyn Friend, and Stella Terry, and the train-bearers Miss Weeta Donaldson and Jean Graham Their dresses were of string coloured point d’esprit over a white glace and were worn with pale green sashes and black picture hats. The three former carried floral muffs of cream and coffee coloured roses, and the little girls crooks, which, with enamel and pearl brooches, were presented to them by the bridegroom.

Lieutenant Robbins R.N. acted as best man, and Viscounte de Garets and Dr. Ferguson R.N., as groomsmen.

After the ceremony, a reception was held by the bride’s mother. at Brantwood.
